Oscar Oruche

Oscar Oruche is an undergraduate at the University of Manchester reading East Asian Studies, with research interests in contemporary Chinese politics, culture, and history. Born in Tokyo and raised in Singapore, Oscar was elected a member of the Royal Historical Society of the UK in May 2026, and describes himself as "an academic in training" aspiring towards a career in public policy or academia. His near two-decade study of Mandarin, supplemented by intermediate Spanish, reflects the multicultural upbringing that has shaped his worldview and his belief that adaptability and relationship-building are the foundation of success.

‍

Living with cerebral palsy since birth, Oscar has made a point of not letting assumptions about his ability define what he pursues. He is a certified Level One World Rugby coach, having spent five years coaching at the Singapore Cricket Club — work he took up as the next best thing to playing the sport himself. He credits his parents for instilling values of integrity, accountability, and resilience, alongside the steady support of his longtime caregiver, whom he calls family.

‍

Outside academia, Oscar is an avid traveler and networker, having built connections across Europe and the US, and a devoted Manchester United supporter. He is guided by a simple philosophy: "If you aspire to be the best, good things are bound to happen" — not in the sense of being first, but of consistently becoming the best version of yourself. Looking ahead, Oscar hopes to be remembered as a force for good, whether through public service, academia, or wherever his pursuit of knowledge takes him next.
